Shelagh Fairbank has been teaching students taking our credit-bearing module on 'The Practice of Entrepreneurship' since 2004. I think that it is fair to say that we were initially unsure of whether to include such a component in the module, but were swayed because a very strong consensus arising from the academic research on entrepreneurs indicating that networking skills are one of their most prominent features. It was a risk, but we felt that our students ought to be exposed to some teaching.

From the very start it was obvious that Shelagh is a marvellous communicator with students and was able to convey some important content as well as inspire and enthuse. Over the years, Shelagh has been happy to modify her content, either following student feedback, our own observations or her own hunches as she has thought over her content. Nowadays the 'networking' session has become a major event in our curriculum, with an hour of introductory content, and hour of a networking event - where we throw the students into a simulation of a wine reception with local business leaders - followed by half an hour of feedback.

Most students find networking intimidating and would, when left to their own devices, mostly opt for an inward-looking rather than outward-looking behaviour pattern. The result of Shelagh's teaching has therefore become a very special moment in our module over the years, a moment when even the most shy of students realises that with discipline and practice, they can overcome their shyness and be more instrumental in how they are able to acquire information and contacts. Even with the most confident, the emphasis on the sheer instrumentality of purposeful networking has come as a revelation. So while our students have benefited over the years from Shelagh's specific focus on teaching networking techniques, her wider impact has been to empower many of our students with the sense that they can achieve what in many cases they thought was beyond them.
